Happy Halloween! We had an exciting last week at Hilburn and are celebrating multiple staff-member successes. Mrs. Jenna Warren, our middle-school counselor, was named North Carolina’s Counselor of the Year. Mrs. Warren will be honored this week at a state conference and will now compete at the national level. Congratulations to Mrs. Warren! She does an outstanding job supporting our students academically, emotionally and behaviorally.
We also named Mrs. Jennifer Browndorf our 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year. I want to share parts of the nomination description Mrs. Browndorf received: “Jennifer has worked hard to create rich, authentic experiences for all of her students including field trips to launch project units, our school learning garden, numerous guest speakers, and a room fully stocked with living and non-living real-world specimens to enhance student learning. The learning garden has already inspired connections across grade levels and curriculum in our school! Through this work, Jennifer has also cultivated numerous relationships with our surrounding community members. These relationships will be an asset to our school as a whole as we continue to grow in our PBL/STEM work . . . .” Congratulations to Mrs. Browndorf!
Radical Reading was again a success! Thank you for your continued support and encouragement at home. Our students and staff have now read a total of 189,357 minutes! We remain on target to achieve our goal of 500,000 minutes but continue to need your support. Students received new Radical Reading Records on Friday and will collect their minutes through this Thursday evening. Please encourage your student to read as much as possible and read with or alongside your student as time allows.
Second Quarter begins today, and report cards will come home this Friday, November 4th. Elementary Parents, we have established November 7th-10th as conference week, so please be looking for communication from your students’ teachers. Middle-School Parents, please request meetings with your grade-level teams or teachers as needed.
Make-Up Picture Day is Monday, November 7th, and remember that we will also have a two-hour delay on Election Day, November 8th.
Have a great week!
