We had a successful week at Hilburn! We celebrated many students’ academic growth, academic excellence and citizenship at our awards assemblies. Our seventh-grade students traveled to Biogen and had the opportunity to explore authentic lab work and experiences with the support of Biogen staff. Check out images from the lab shared by their teacher, Ms. Gunter.
Middle-School Honor Roll: We want to celebrate the 109 middle-school students who earned Honor Roll in the second quarter. Twenty-four students earned All A Honor Roll, and eighty-five students earned A/B Honor Roll. We congratulate these students on their hard work and their commitment to excellence in academics.
Why I Teach: We are featuring a new component of Hawk Talk - essays from our teachers about why they teach our students. Our first essay is from Ms. Lauren Boop, sixth-grade Social Studies teacher.
I could speak for hours on the many different reasons why I teach. Simply put, I teach because I want to help advocate for our future generations. I teach because I want my students to understand global connections, restorative social justice and the history of our world. I get to empower them to think critically, innovate, and understand past & present issues. This environment allows me to see 21st century global citizens being molded every single day. I teach because our children give me hope for the future.
Child Nutrition Services Update: In late February, WCPSS Child Nutrition Services will begin providing a new service for families. They plan to use School Messenger to make weekly calls on Wednesday afternoons to alert elementary and middle-school parents who have low balances on their child’s school meals account to add money to the account. Each week, they will identify students who are moving to low balances to give their families a brief phone reminder.
Eighth-Grade Registration: We will host a High School Registration Parent Information Session at Hilburn Academy on Tuesday, February 21st, from 5:30-6:30 in the Media Center. Mrs. Warren will present classroom guidance lessons on high-school registration to all eighth-grade students via Science class on February 23rd and 24th.
Upcoming Events: Please note that Monday, February 20th, is now a school day. Middle-School students will follow an A-day schedule.
