As I shared last week, it is a busy month at Hilburn Academy. I have lots of information to share; before doing so, I want to remind you of these important upcoming dates:
- Wednesday - October 12: Picture Day
- Thursday - October 13: All Box Tops for Education due
- Wednesday - October 19: National Unity Day (wear orange)
- Friday - October 21: Early-Release Day at 12:30
- Friday - October 28: Last Day of First Quarter
- Monday - October 31: School Open - Make Up Day
Bullying Awareness: Ms. Daley and Mrs. Warren will be supporting our community in the following ways this month:
- Guidance lessons focused on bullying prevention in all K-8 classrooms
- Hawk News features on bullying prevention this month and throughout the school year
- Celebration of National Unity Day on Wednesday, October 19th. All are invited to wear orange!
- More information on bullying prevention can be found at http://www.wcpss.net/domain/46.
Character Education: We kicked off our program for all students this month thank you to the help of Ms. Daley and Mrs. Warren. Students who are recognized for exhibiting the character traits will receive recognition and a free lunch from Chick-fil-A at the end of each month. In support of bullying prevention, our October focus is Integrity, doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
Election Day: Please be aware that all Wake County schools will open on a two-hour delay Tuesday, November 8th because of the anticipated high traffic on Election Day. Schools buses will pick up students two hours later than their regular daily schedule.
Hawk News: Are you interested in viewing things differently than you've viewed them before? If so, download the app Aurasma on your smart device and follow Hilburn Academy for an augmented reality experience. The next time you're on campus, keep an eye out for little Hawk stickers in the bottom right hand corner of items hanging on the walls. When you see one, open Aurasma, click on the purple selection tool at the bottom of the screen and hover over the item. Once you've done that, digital content will come to life. As the year progresses on, more and more "Auras" will be created by the Hawk Media students. Here's an example of Aurasma in action. Have fun!
Little Free Library: We are excited to open a Little Free Library in the Hilburn lobby this month. If you have books you are willing to donate to our library, please send them to the main office. We’ll share photographs and borrowing details once it is fully established.
Radical Reading: On Monday, October 17th, we will launch our Radical Reading Challenge. We are challenging all students and staff to read at least 20 minutes each day of the week for 30 days for a total of 500,000 minutes. Students and staff will receive a weekly Radical Reading Record to record and monitor their reading. We will read every day of the week, including weekends, for at least 20 minutes and record what we read and for how long from Monday, October 17th to Tuesday, November 15th. Radical Reading Records will be collected by homeroom teachers and tabulated by volunteers on Friday mornings, and new Radical Reading Records will be distributed to students on Friday afternoons so they can continue their reading. We will keep track of our cumulative minutes read in the lobby for all to see. Each Friday, we will update our minutes so that our community can watch our progress. Weekly competitions will be hosted by our PTA, and students will be acknowledged and/or have the opportunity to win prizes, and we will have a conclusive celebratory pep rally in conjunction with the Carolina Hurricanes. We will be sending Radical Reading Records and specifics about prizes home on Monday, October 17th. Please be looking for these items!
We are looking forward to another great week.
