Thank you, too, to everyone who visited our STEAM Expo; if you were unable to do so, I hope you were following us on Twitter! Our students demonstrated strong presentation skills, thoughtful STEAM artifacts, and an awareness of the Engineering Design Process and the importance of reflection and feedback. We are extremely proud of our students’ and teachers’ hard work and are grateful we had an opportunity to celebrate it.

North Carolina Final Exams for Middle-School Students: For the past two years, WCPSS has had a waiver from the State Board of Education that has exempted the district from having to administer NC Final Exams at the middle school level in Science and Social studies, but due to a change in state law, that waiver is no longer in effect. All middle-school students will take a NCFE in Science and Social Studies this year. Please know our teachers and students have been aware of this information all year and have planned and prepared accordingly.
PTA Thank You: I want to express mine and our students’ and teachers’ thanks to our PTA. This year, they gave $75 or more to fifty-plus teachers who have sought their funding support for classroom supplies or professional development opportunities. They have hosted all of our cultural arts experiences, which have allowed for explicit classroom connections, and they ensure events like our Fall Festival, Annual Book Fair, Fun Run and Spring Carnival take place to support and strengthen our school community. It is the PTA who supports our School Store, keeps Hilburn spirit wear available and hosts our Family Night Outs. Thank you, PTA members, for helping us ensure strong programming and an inviting school culture for all.
Rising Seventh and Eighth-Grade News: Last week, Mrs. Warren visited all rising 7th and 8th grade students’ classrooms to discuss the upcoming registration process. All students should have received a packet of information, including a parent letter describing the course registration process, your child's specific course recommendations for next year, and instructions to complete the online registration via PowerSchool. The registration window ends this Thursday, March 30th. Mrs. Warren and her intern are available to support students/families as needed this week. All students will need to turn in their signed course recommendation form by March 27th and a signed course verification sheet (printed from PowerSchool after registering) by March 31st.
Why I Teach: This week, we hear from Mrs. Anna Brozell, a member of our fourth-grade team.
