I want to start by celebrating our second and third-grade students, who gave a heartfelt performance at their Festival of Flowers Concert on Thursday. Seeing our students perform “We Are the World” in both Spanish and English was a favorite experience for me at Hilburn thus far, and it was truly a moment where all of us – parents and teachers – know the meaning of our work. I want to extend a thank you to Mrs. Gomez and Mrs. Grovenstein for their collaboration on this concert.
We are also celebrating Mrs. Kristin Burnette, our ID Mod II teacher, who has been awarded a Lara Jane Parker Award by the New Voices Foundation. Mrs. Burnette was acknowledged for her excellence in the classroom and for her student advocacy. In particular, Mrs. Burnette works hard to ensure her students have access to mainstreaming opportunities and all the events that make Hilburn special. Congratulations, Mrs. Burnette.
Career Week and STEAM Expo: This week is Career Week at Hilburn. We are excited to be hosting many parents and business partners as guest speakers. Please be sure to ask your student about what he/she is hearing from guest speakers in the classroom. Part of Career Week is our STEAM Expo this Thursday. Be looking for communication from your classroom teacher and/or room parent about viewing students’ work and projects. Our Pre-K, Kindergarten, Second Grade and Third Grade students will show work from 10:00 to 11:00; our middle-school students will show work from 12:15 to 1:15; and our First, Fourth and Fifth-Grade students will show work from 1:15 to 2:15. Please join us!
Why I Teach: This week’s essay is from our librarian, Mrs. Sharon Freeze. We are excited to consider Mrs. Freeze one of our teachers and are proud of the work she does to support and excite students and teachers in our Media MakerSpace.
