Our students very much enjoyed the Annual Book Fair last week, and we enjoyed watching them make thoughtful purchases and share their new books with teachers and friends. We have two important dates this week: The Band Concert is Thursday, the 17th, at 6:30, and Friday, the 18th, is an early-release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Friday and will return to campus on Monday, January 4th.
Hilburn Academy will host an Open House on Wednesday, January 6th, at 5:00. Fifth-Grade Parents, please mark your calendars to join us that evening and scope out our middle-school offerings. We ask that you all help us market ourselves by sharing this date with interested friends and neighbors.
Starting this Monday, the front door will be locked at 3:30 each day. If you are visiting the school after 3:30, please know you will have to ring the bell and wait for a Hilburn staff member to open the door. This change is in our staff members’ and Aftercare students’ best interests, and we appreciate your understanding.
We remain committed to the goal that all of our Hilburn Hawks will read at or above grade level and enjoy the reading they do. I am sharing our last literacy tip this week; hopefully, you and your student(s) have found something useful and had some opportunities to read and discuss books together. We hope you and your student(s) will find some time to read some fun, new books together when at home over winter break.
Literacy Tip #9: The 40-Book Challenge
Challenging your child (and yourself) to read 40 books within the school year in many different genres encapsulates all of the previous strategies for engaging your gifted or advanced reader in a more fulfilling reading life. We introduced this challenge to staff and students in September, but it’s never too late to start! Try it for one year and note the changes in your reading life and your child’s reading life!
We wish all of you a wonderful, restful and fun winter break.
