Google Expeditions Pioneer Program will be at Hilburn today! Eighteen of our classes will use Google Cardboard to explore guided tours of places all over the world and in space. Each of the teachers has chosen a different virtual reality tour for his or her students, and we are excited for them to have this opportunity.
I am excited to announce that we have teachers being recognized by a variety of reputable programs. Ms. Root, seventh-grade math, won a $7,500 grant to implement a sustainable architecture program in her classroom and will be purchasing a class set of iPads as well as a 3D printer for the purpose. Ms. Boop, sixth and eighth-grade social studies, has been awarded an African Diaspora Fellows Award and a South African Borchardt Award; these awards will allow Ms. Boop to study abroad and to learn from teachers around the world. Ms. Browndorf, sixth-grade science, and Ms. Boop have won a collaborative Project-Based Learning Fellowship through the NC Museum of Natural Sciences; they will develop projects for sixth-grade students in the 2016-2017 school year. Though we cannot release their names, we do have two other teachers interviewing for Kenan Fellowships this week and are thrilled to celebrate all of their successes and the learning experiences they will bring to your students in our classrooms.
We secured a third official business partner last week: NC State’s Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. We look forward to having these professors and their students support our students’ science instruction.
The Student Government sponsored food drive continues through this Friday, March 11. Please continue to send cans by students throughout the week - learn more on our PTA website.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHEDULE
Middle-School Parents, during the 2016-2017 school year, our students will follow an A-day/B-day block schedule. This means that students will take a total of eight classes, four on A days and four on B days, all year long. Each class will be ninety minutes. We are excited our teachers want to move forward with this schedule as it allows our students increased elective opportunities and aligns with our STEAM programming.
Have a great week.
