The second quarter got off to a great start! Report cards went home with students on Friday, and elementary-school conferences are being scheduled for next week. Our middle-school students will be performing Gretchen and the Grudge this Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6. Please join us at 6:30 and support our drama program. We will host a middle-school dance next Friday, November 13.
4 Cs: This week’s focus is Communication. Students who are strong communicators listen, comprehend and critique effectively by adapting to diverse audiences, tasks, purposes and disciplines. Effective communicators are also able to use multiple media to demonstrate their thinking and reasoning. You can help our students strengthen their communication skills at home!
Make sure your student is listening actively.
- Ask follow-up questions.
- Provide positive feedback on his or her body language, eye contact, etc.
- Ask for a summary or counter-argument.
- Challenge his or her ideas.
Coach your student to accurately and confidently ask and answer questions.
Challenge your student to consider and analyze alternative perspectives.
Challenge your student to present information concisely and logically.
- Ask your student for evidence.
- Encourage him to revisit his words or work to make sure it is as direct and organized as possible.
- Ask reflective questions: Are there other ways to present this information?
Guide your student to consider his or her audience; for example, would he pose a request to you in the same way he would to a teacher or sibling? What might be different?
Encourage your student to use multiple media whenever it’s an option.
Thank you for all of your assistance in classrooms during Friday’s learning experiences, and please remember you do need to have an appointment when visiting our classrooms. I hope each of your families enjoyed a safe and fun holiday weekend.
