It is with great sadness that I share this information with you: Mrs. Amy Flaim passed away Friday afternoon. Mrs. Flaim was one of our Assistant Principals here at Hilburn Academy and has passed away after a difficult battle with cancer. She has been a part of our school family for many years and was beloved by staff and many students. Mrs. Flaim was a strong woman. She was committed to our work and to growing all of our students, and she invested herself wholeheartedly in this work every day. She will be greatly missed, and our thoughts go out to her family.
I know you join us in our sadness. We wanted to provide this information to you so that you can have a conversation with your child/children as most students did know Mrs. Flaim. In an effort to address student concerns, we went into the classrooms to share this news with them this morning, and thanks to additional staff, we have been able to support students and to provide crisis support for the students in need of extra love.
Such an event can produce confusion and fear in children. A young child may not understand the finality of death and may expect the deceased to return. Children may also worry that their own parents or teacher will die. For children who have experienced a loss, the response may be extreme. By providing factual information, offering emotional support, and giving them a chance to talk, our School Crisis Team will work to help our students cope with their loss.
If you have concerns for your child and would like assistance, please call us at 919.571.6800.
