We hope you all have enjoyed a restful and adventurous summer and are looking forward to welcoming each and every one of you on Monday, August 29th. We have been busily preparing for your arrival and know the 2016-2017 school year will be a great success for students, families and staff. As we prepare for your arrival, we do want to share some information that will help the school year begin more smoothly and will continue to share information in the coming weeks.
The Monday Hawk Talk is the best way to stay abreast of school-wide news and events. We encourage you to review these communications carefully. At the elementary level, Room Parent communications offer specifics about your child’s classroom. We will also update our website and tweet announcements, including bus departures. Please follow Hilburn Academy on Twitter. The Google calendar on our website lists all school-wide events, including the teacher workdays, early-release days and holidays that are consolidated on the WCPSS calendar.
Policies and Procedures
We have updated our Student-Parent Handbook. Please review this information carefully and contact the school if you have questions.
We strongly encourage everyone who has bus service to use the bus as soon as possible. Doing so will ensure your student(s) keeps bus service throughout the school year and will, most likely, get your student to school and home earlier than carpooling.
If you plan to use the carpool line at any time, we ask that you purchase a carpool tag. Carpool tags are $2.00 and will be for sale during Meet-the-Teacher on Thursday, August 25th, and thereafter. You need $2.00 cash on hand to receive a tag. Please note that we will follow a strict morning drop-off practice this year: Students who are not out of their cars by 8:10 will have to be escorted in by their parents. We will enforce this rule from the beginning of school in hopes of ensuring all students are in class and ready to learn at 8:15.
Bus routes will be posted on WCPSS this Friday, August 19th. If you need bus service and have not yet registered, you can still register with WCPSS; however, bus service is not guaranteed the first days of school. Likewise, if you have registered but do not use bus service the first ten days of school, you will lose your bus service.
All Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st Grade students will be tagged at the start of the school year with home, school and bus route information to ensure their safety and awareness. They will be assigned to sit on the right side of the bus, beginning with the first seat, and the driver will announce the bus stop location as it is approaching. Drivers will read the identifier and confirm that the student disembarking is assigned to that bus stop. Parents/Caregivers are required to meet their Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st Grade students at bus stops, so please plan to be at your child’s stop.
