​Hilburn Academy is celebrating its 25th Anniversary!

​The 2020 school year didn't end like we expected, but we are still happy to commemorate 25 years of Hilburn Academy this year! Students receive a 25th Anniversary glow-in-the-dark keychain with their materials pick up in late August, and teachers and staff also all received a 25th Anniversary magnet clip. Thank you to our Hilburn Anniversary Committee for their work over the past year and a half. Committee co-chairs are Dawn Vaughan and Catie Burnette.

Hilburn PTA and Hilburn Academy formed a 25th Anniversary Committee with PTA Board members, faculty, staff and administrators to plan ways to celebrate.

The Anniversary Committee Co-Chairs are:

Other staff and volunteers are also involved with the year-long commemoration. Two of the Anniversary Committee members know Hilburn very, very well -- Elissa Walker was once a student here, and Melissa Pendergraft has been here before and after it became a K-8.

Hilburn has changed over the years, opening first in 1994 to house students from a different school, then reopened in 1995 to serve K-3 elementary students for both Hilburn and Leesville Elementary.

It eventually became its own full elementary school known as Hilburn Drive Elementary, then became a K-8 STEAM school called Hilburn Drive Academy.

​Now we call it Hilburn Academy.

​Hilburn also has one preschool class and special education classes. We are still connected with the Leesville community as our middle school athletes play for Leesville Middle, and our school feeds into Leesville High School.

How we're celebrating and commemorating: 

Logo: Anniversary logo designed and donated by Jennifer Pittman.

Fundraiser: PTA's Fill Our Nest Fundraiser was held over 25 days for our 25th Anniversary in the fall of 2019.

Mascot: PTA purchased a new Hilburn Hawk mascot costume in 2019 and named it as part of the anniversary commemoration. Students and teachers voted and chose the name Hilburt.

Watch for a new Hawksome 25th Anniversary mural designed by art teacher Ms. Cleveland that will be painted this spring! We're excited to see a blank wall transformed into awesome art. Thank you, Ms. Cleveland!

Time Capsule: PTA donated a time capsule and commemorative plaque that we will fill and bury in 2020 on the school grounds. The metal cylinder capsule is water resistant and sealed to preserve papers, photos and other small items representing all grades in the school. We'll show off time capsule items at the Talent Show.
